Laiki Geitonia

The cultural heart of Nicosia

Old town1 min readUpdated 3 December 2021

If you are in downtown Nicosia, then a walk through Laiki Geitonia — the Traditional Neighbourhood — is necessary. It is a pedestrianised quarter whose entrance is just off Onasagorou Street in the old town, inside the city walls on Aristocyprou and Praxandrou streets, close to Nicosia’s two most popular streets, Onasagorou and Ledras.

The paved buildings and streets of Laiki Geitonia have been restored to recall the traditional Nicosia of the 1990s. There are numerous taverns, cafeterias and restaurants where you can have traditional Cypriot food, a cup of Cyprus coffee or a cold beer with some halloumi, lountza or tsamarella.

For those who like collecting small reminders of a trip, there are plenty of souvenir shops in the area, with local products for sale too. The paved streets make this the perfect place for locals and visitors curious about Nicosia’s historical culture and traditional architecture — you will feel you have stepped back in time walking among these buildings. The main tourist information centre of Nicosia is here as well.
