Caledonia is the best known of the island’s waterfalls, tucked into the Troodos mountains. It comes with a good walk attached, which is much of why people make the trip.
Where the trail starts
The trail begins just 700 metres from the main road connecting Troodos and Platres, near the President’s summer residence, which makes it easy to find. There is an alternative start at the Psilo Dentro picnic site, which reaches the falls by a shorter route.
From the main trailhead the path runs about 3 kilometres one way — a 6-kilometre round trip — moderately uphill, with around 200 metres of ascent. It follows the Kryos Potamos river through forest, well shaded, which makes it a good choice on a warm day. The Psilo Dentro route is only 1 kilometre to the falls, a 2-kilometre round trip, and less steep: the one to take with children.
What you walk through
Tall pines, wildflowers and a good deal of birdlife. The area is part of the Troodos forest, home to squirrels, rabbits and many bird species, and the ecosystem is a large part of the reward.
