Cypriot traditional dress was never only clothing. Cut, colour and ornament announced social status, age, whether the wearer was married, and which village they came from — a visual language read at a glance across a crowded festival.
The costumes developed over centuries out of local materials, village tradition and Mediterranean influence, and they were worn for festivals, weddings and ceremonies as well as ordinary working days. Everyday garments were plain and practical; festive versions took brighter colour, richer cloth and far more elaborate embroidery.
